Catalyst or Meraki is a management choice. Catalyst switches are configured on the switch or through Cisco's management tools, and Catalyst 9000 part numbers carry a software tier in the name, such as Network Essentials or Network Advantage. Meraki switches are managed from the cloud, so you see and configure every site from one place, and every current Meraki product needs a valid license to operate. Meraki's switch range also includes Catalyst 9300-M models.
Then size the switch. Count the ports you need today and add room to grow. Decide which devices need PoE, such as phones, cameras and access points, and add up their power, because the switch's total PoE budget matters as much as its number of PoE ports. Check the uplinks too: 10G and fiber uplinks keep traffic moving between closets. Higher-end Catalyst 9300 models offer 90W PoE for smart-building devices.
To price a switch order accurately, send the family you prefer, the port count for each closet, your PoE needs, the uplink speeds and, for Meraki, the license term. - Should I choose Catalyst or Meraki?
- Choose Meraki if you want to manage switches and access points from one cloud dashboard across several sites and accept a license for each device. Choose Catalyst if you prefer to configure switches directly or already use Cisco's management tools. Both are listed here, so tell us how you plan to run the network.
- Does a Meraki switch need a license?
- Yes. Cisco states that all current Meraki products need valid licensing to operate, and each active device needs its own license, including both switches of a warm-spare pair. Tell us the term you want and we quote the license with the hardware.
- Which Catalyst is right for a small office?
- The Catalyst 1200 and 1300 are Cisco's switches for small and medium-sized businesses and suit an office closet. The Catalyst 9000 series, including the 9200 and 9300, is the choice for larger sites and campus networks. Send your port and PoE counts and your account manager recommends the matching models.
- How many ports and how much PoE do I need?
- Count every wired device today, add uplinks and leave spare ports for growth. For PoE, add up the power each phone, camera and access point needs and compare it with the switch's total PoE budget, not only its number of PoE ports.
