- What is the difference between a business access point and a home router?
- A business access point is built to carry many simultaneous users, mounts on a wall or ceiling, and is managed centrally alongside your other access points. A home router bundles everything into one box for a small space. Once an office has more than a few users, dedicated access points deliver better coverage and far more control.
- How many access points do I need?
- It depends on floor area, walls and materials, ceiling height and how many people and devices connect at once. Several well-placed access points usually outperform one powerful unit, and they let devices roam as people move around the office. For a large or complex building, a wireless site survey before you buy shows exactly where coverage is needed.
- Do access points need PoE?
- Most business access points are powered over the network cable with PoE, so you never run outlets to the ceiling. Plan for a PoE switch or PoE injectors, check the PoE class each access point requires, and confirm the switch's total power budget covers every access point plus your phones and cameras.
- Which Wi-Fi standard should I choose?
- Wi-Fi 6 and newer standards handle more devices at once and higher speeds, but every device connects only at the standard it supports. Choose a current-generation access point so it stays useful as you refresh laptops and phones, and check that your switch uplinks are fast enough for the speeds the access point can deliver.
